In November 2015 we spent 17 days in Japan, so I thought it would be useful to share how much it cost us.
Please note that we travelled Japan on a budget and stayed mostly in 8 – 10 mixed bed dorm rooms, ate alot of ramen from local restaurants that also provided unlimited water / tea, and also ate take away meals from the handy 7-eleven stores that will even warm up your meal in a microwave.
Excluding flights we spent £98 per day ($146) for the two of us / £49 each per day ($73).
We bought the 14 day JR pass so I have split this cost across the 17 days we were in Japan.
Below are examples of our spending in Tokyo and Nikko. These were the most expensive places we stayed in Japan due to the cost of the metro in Tokyo (indicated by ‘pasmo card’ cost), the high accommodation cost in Nikko, as well as the cost of the bus around the temples/lake in Nikko and temple entry cost.
