As I sit writing this I’m on a train from Lopburi to Chiang Mai, and I have lush green rice paddies to my left and majestic hills rising from the flat paddies to my right, it’s not hard for me to tell you why I love Thailand. This is my third trip to this wonderful country in 5 years and I hope to visit many more times in the future.
1. The Thai people are the friendliest I have ever met, and they never stop smiling. The woman sat next to you on the train will say hello and ask you where you’re going; the street vendor will hand you delicious food to sample; the hostel owner will sit down with you and tell you all the great things there is to see in their wonderful city / town.
2. The food is out of this world. You can order anything on the menu and it will be delicious, in fact, why don’t you spin a coin on the menu and see where it lands, or alternatively tell the vendor ‘surprise me’ and see what you get. My favourite meal in Thailand is the chicken and cashew nut stir fry.
3. The scenery is beautiful and diverse. The north of Thailand is a great contrast to the south; as you head north you’ll travel past many lush green rice paddies, then you’ll hit the hills that rise sharply from the paddies and make the area ideal for trekking. The south of Thailand is a playground for beach bunnies and island hopping is made easy by the many ferries that ply routes between the islands. I love eating on the beach in Thailand then grabbing a drink and gazing at the stars in the twinkling dark night’s sky.
4. Shopping. Thailand is heaven for shopaholics and one could easily shop almost 24 hours a day in the malls and night markets. My favourite mall in Thailand is the MBK Centre in Bangkok, it is full of everything you could ever want; clothes, electrical’s, dvd’s, food, cinema, bowling and even karaoke booths! I recommend you travel to Thailand with an empty suitcase as you will want to fill it with all your amazing purchases.
