Mui Ne, Vietnam – Forget the flash sports car or bimbo wife, kite surfing is the new midlife crisis for middle aged men

We arrived in Mui Ne with high expectations – we had read in the lonely planet that you can surf here and we were looking forward to doing a couple of beginner lessons (in between catching some rays on the beach). Although when we arrived it was apparent that we had come to the wrong place as it seemed this place ONLY caters for middle aged men who want to kite surf (they are the only ones that can afford it at $60 an hour) and Russian tourists.

We managed to find a budget guesthouse on the beachfront, however it was packed with Russian kite surfers and the beachfront was dominated by them – it was unsafe to sunbathe in the area for fear of being trod on or having a kite crash down on top of you.

At night we found that Mui Ne had no night life or atmosphere as the place just seems to cater to people with cash to waste who stay and eat in their flash resort hotels. The beach front is mostly lined with expensive hotels or kite surfing outfits, and the opposite side of the road is lined with overpriced restaurants serving very lack lustre food.

We were planning to stay three days in Mui Ne but ended up getting a bus out of there the very next day and even that was too long. If you are thinking of visiting Mui Ne, think again, unless you are a total kitesurfing fanatic, or have the cash to spend learning. However, if you’ve just hit your forties and feel something is missing, then this is the place for you.

I didn’t know there’s a beach in Muine. I went there to see and experience sandunes the first time in my life though… Hmmm, I might check the beach out when I go back to Muine.

This is sad to hear. I loved Mui Ne beach, and spent many weekends there when I lived in Vietnam a number of years back. We always had a great time, particularly partying on the beach at Wax bar until the sun came up. The police seemed to be cracking down on that sort of thing quite heavily just before I left though. It seems that they succeeded 🙁
